There are some great music venues in London. Those which are well known, and those which aren’t so much.

Are you a music lover who would like to do more than feed your Facebook or Partypoker habit at the weekend? If so, here are four music venues you should visit at least once in London.

Bush Hall

In Shepherd’s Bush, the Bush Hall is probably the second most popular venue, after the Empire down the road. However the Hall maintains a certain charm about it that is difficult to come by. With High ceilings for better sound and a bar area that is separate, the venue is one of the best to go and enjoy your favourite artists. R.E.M, The Killers and Duffy have all played there.

The Lexington

The Lexington is sandwiched between seedy Kings Cross and the sophisticated air of Islington, and is a corner pub which is hard to define. It isn’t quite an English pub with its American-style lounge bar, but at the same time it is. Downstairs you can relax in luxury, while upstairs you can get a little messy. There’s a friendliness about the place too, with a genuine and happy dialogue between the audience and the bands who play there.

Café Oto

It hasn’t been open that long (since 2008), but this venue in Dalston has quickly established itself as a venue for those interested in music just outside of the mainstream. The café has housed performances from Miki Yui and Rolf Julius in recent times, despite having no stage. However the freedom bands are allowed makes up for this minimalist take.

Barbican

The home of the London Symphony Orchestra, is also known to house film screenings, art exhibitions and theatre performances too. Famed for its variety of classical and contemporary music, this 2,000 capacity hall is the perfect place for a gig. May of the acts who appear take advantage of its orchestral roots during their performances.

Introducing….Hollywood Blockbusters – a new concept in corporate musical entertainment. Be it Hollywood theme nights, awards ceremonies, movie launches or any event which demands something different and special, the Blockbusters are the only people to turn to. This 8-piece instrumental band, with full horn section, can offer many different entertainment packages.

DINNER / COCKTAIL RECEPTION MUSIC  -  The band can perform an hour of TV, movie and arcade theme medleys, which can be augmented with a quiz – name the theme tune or film tune bingo (crossing off the names on their cards as they are played). With both quizzes, those that wish to partake can, others may wish to simply enjoy the music in the background while they socialise! We can provide videos to accompany these medleys, with cartoon versions of special guests (MDs, team leaders etc)

AWARD STINGS  -  We have specially arranged short musical stings for award presentations etc, giving your client’s night a real touch of class.

EVENING DANCING  -  With the addition of singers, the band can also provide the whole evening’s dancing, including disco.

TEAM BUILDING EXERCISES  -  We are open to suggestions as to how best a client can benefit from this, but examples are making soundtracks for various movie scenes – horror, comedy, romance etc – learning the importance of the harmony between sound and pictures in a very hands-on way, choosing which music should accompany which clip. We will work closely with the client to fit in with individual requirements.

So The Blockbusters are a one-stop corporate entertainment package, with the possibility of team building during the day, dinner music and/or quiz followed by dancing til the early hours. The band consist of the UK’s top corporate and private function bands who perform internationally for the world’s biggest clients, so you know that booking the Blockbusters will put you in good hands.

From this Sunday 22nd January the Rumba Lounge will be re-opening its doors as it has finally been given its permanent home, every Sunday from 7pm-9pm

Designed for what it has always been intended for, to practise your Ballroom and Latin American moves, we have looked at what we feel is going to further help grow your dancing experiences and we’ve partnered it with a bit of a twist.

FAQ

Do I really need to practise? Yes of course and just as that age old saying goes ‘practise makes perfect’ and so we really want to help you do just that. We are sure no one really likes the idea of practising, but with us making the ambience a small party affair each Sunday night and by welcoming you with a complimentary glass of bubbly and 15-minute Mega master class to kick start the night, we know you will soon be practising non-stop on our beautiful sprung maple dance floor without even realising it.

Why only two hours? We began to notice confusion about what was a time to practise and what was a time to sit back and relax. Of course at Karen Hardy Studios our doors are always open for you to come and use the champagne lounge anytime you like to relax and unwind, even if you do not have a lesson booked. But at The Rumba Lounge it’s time to have a party and practise putting those steps you are working on to good use. We noticed previously how there was a tendency for you to take your time in getting on that dance floor and we reflected that anytime a form of practise is required it needs to be in a restricted and disciplined time to ensure maximum quality of rehearsals rather than an extend time of procrastinating!

Can I have a drink and dance? Of course you can, because for most of you practising, dancing, partnering, dance floor and music are all words that conjure up sheer and utter fear in so many of you. A drink to relax your nerves and get you going is probably for some of you just what you need and there is a complimentary glass of bubbly waiting for you on your arrival.

Can I come alone? Of course you can. Firstly, we always like you to feel at home within our studios beautiful surroundings and at ease thus making it optional to bring an accompanying guest. Also, our staff are always there to service you from our welcoming bar staff to our Guest Liaison Manager available for any questions you may have on the night or to simply talk about your day at the office. Of course Ballroom dancing means two people moving around a dance floor together, so we have a wonderful additional service called our ‘Perfect Partner’ where you can book in advance a partner to lead or follow you around the dance floor for the 2 hours. However, at The Rumba Lounge we not only aim to improve your dancing skills but also your communication skills, your confidence skills and your sheer enjoyment of dance, so taking a deep breath and asking someone to dance is probably the hardest obstacle of them all. Go on have a go…

How much does it cost? From perfecting hitting a golf ball at a golf range, to mastering the art of getting that tennis ball to your opponent on the other side of a tennis court, investing in practise time is one of the best ways to improve whatever you maybe wishing to perfect. For those of you that are Karen Hardy Studios members we are delighted to gift you 12 complimentary ‘Practise Party’ entry tickets, including your complimentary drink and 15minute Mega Master Class. This at least means you have the chance to visit us once a month however, we do hope to see you a lot lot more. Vashti Hunter- Cellist

Vashti Hunter was born in London in 1986. She has been the recipient of many awards and prizes including winning 1st prize in the Fritz-Behrens-Stiftung Cello Competition in Germany (2010), 1st prize in the London Cello Society Competition (2008) and consequently asked to record a CD by Keith Harvey, the head of the Society, 2nd prize in the European Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Duo Competition (2006), as well as the prestigious Barbirolli and Harold Craxton(2007) awards from the Royal Academy of Music and the coveted Ivan Sutton Award from the Guildhall School of Music, London. She graduated from the Bachelors Program at the RAM in 2008 with First Class Honours and was presented with an award for receiving the 2nd highest mark over-all in her year. In 2009 she completed her Masters Degree at the GSMD, also passing with First Class Honours.

Vashti is currently based in Hannover, Germany, where she is studying for a ‘Solo Class Diploma’ with international soloist Leonid Gorokhov, and is being supported by a generous award from the Leverhulme Trust. Other awards which have made her studies possible include gifts from the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, Countess of Munster Trust and Musician’s Benevolent Fund. As a soloist, Vashti has played all over the UK in Recitals and with Orchestras such as the London School’s Symphony Orchestra, the Southbank Sinfonia, the Elgar Players, and in Germany playing the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Braunschweig-Dom-Sinfonie-Orchester in April 2010. She has played solo recitals in some of the most prestigious venues in the UK including the Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Hall, St.John’s Smith Square, Kings Place in London, Colston Hall in Bristol and Wells Cathedral in Somerset.

As a chamber musician Vashti has been much in demand, having been invited this year to lead the Camerata Nordica, one of Sweden’s leading chamber orchestras, where she has had the opportunity to work alongside Pekka Kuusisto, Terje Tonneson and Daniel Bard. Other chamber music collaborations include performances in Paris with the Hermitage Trio (Boris Garlitzky, Alexander Zemstov, Leonid Gorokhov), Mats Lidstrom and Bengt Forsberg at the Aurora Music Festival, Sweden, and with Radovan Vladkovich, Istvan Vardai, Sylvia Markovicci and Paul Neubauer at the Encuentro de Musica y Academia de Santander, Spain. In June she played a recital at the ‘Belgrade Cello Fest’ with Leonid Gorokhov. She recently attended the European Chamber Music Academy, in Northern Germany with her Piano Trio, where she took part in classes with renowned musician Hatto Beyerle. Vashti has benefitted from playing in masterclasses with Natalia Gutman, Anner Bylsma, Gary Hoffman, Alexander Rudin, Arto Noras, Alexei Lubimov as well as with members of the Szymanowski, Alban Berg, Skampa and Amadeus Quartets.

Vashti plays on a ‘Thibout’ cello made in 1838, kindly awarded to her by the Fritz Behrens-Stiftung in Germany.

From Motown to James Brown, Funk to Blues, this International Artiste and his band will Rock your party and get your guest from all ages into the groove of Rhythm and Blues. Having him for your function is an honour by itself as he has shared the stage with BB King. Not many will dispute that he probably has the most awesome voice and stage presence. His Motown function band has grown form strength to strength and is one of the most in demand band for weddings and corporate events in London and the rest of the UK including a few high profile events abroad. Originally from Detroit, Michigan USA, He lived near Hitsville and grew up to Motown grooves. Dear Marcus Malone and Motor City Party Band,
We are so sorry it has taken us so long to write to you to say thank you very much for the amazing music you provided at our wedding reception on 24 August 2008. I started my new job as a teacher as soon as we got back from our honeymoon and since then it has been non stop work in the evenings and most weekends. We also moved fairly soon after the wedding and, although this was only to the flat next door, the move was quite stressful and took up a lot of our spare time.

We had a fabulous time at our reception and we really had a fantastic time on the dance floor, as did many of our guest. The music we had at our wedding was very important to us and our parents, in order that the right atmosphere was created, and we couldn’t have imagined the music and dancing to go any better. As soon as the the music stated the dance floor quickly filled up and it remained full all night. We really do feel that you are a truly brilliant band and so many of our friends and family have commented on how amazing you were.

Dear Marcus,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the Motor City band personally for playing at our Wedding on the 11th October 2008.

As a music lover I had previously had nightmares about the quality of wedding entertainment on offer at weddings, especially after attending various others which I felt had been let down by a cheesy disco at the end, playing the usual dire mixture of songs from nasty wedding compilation albums, all I can say is they should have booked the Motor City Party Band because you were fantastic.

The first dance of “Something” by George Harrison, although not Motown, was covered with such finesse even my seriously fanatical Beatles fan friend was deeply impressed. Great vocals and a spot on guitar solo were the comments.You judged the mood perfectly throughout the evening, managing to get almost every single guest on the dance floor at some point. I think it speaks volumes for this to range from my 10 year old cousin to my 85 year old grandmother.

Everyone was commenting on how wonderful the band was, some people said you were the best band they had ever seen! others said how they would like to book you themselves in the future, so expect some more contacts for sure.

Finally I would like to say a special thanks for traveling to play for us, we look forward to booking you again in London either personally or as a recommendation at work.

Sorry this has been a while in coming forward, we have just returned from a fantastic honeymoon in Fiji and California (and now feel very cold indeed having been in 90+ degrees for the last three weeks!!)

We had a great day on the wedding and I wanted to write to thank you for your utmost professionalism and dedication the job in hand -which was making our wedding evening a great night for everyone, and getting people who I’ve never seen move out of their chairs at weddings previously, up on that dancefloor shakin their thang!! You were all we had hoped for and more and I can only genuinely thank you for helping our wedding to be so much fun.

Everyone commented on what a great band you are and how much fun you gave to the party. I was only too sorry that I didn’t get to spend more time on the dancefloor (although that might have been in everyone’s best interests given my general lack of co-ordination…!!!) the night seemed to whizz by so fast, it was so much fun. I also would like to thank you for being flexible regarding the timings etc – my father and I had previously had a few heated debates about the fireworks as he kept changing his mind on the timings of doing it – so I really appreciated you being generous in your time and the general organization of everything with him changing his mind at the last minute!

Son Latin is a London based Latin American Dance Band which was created with the collective talents from London , various South American Countries and Colombia. This two to fourteen piece band includes the traditional Latin rhythm section; piano, Timbales, and Congas.

The band is ideal for any South American themed party as they perform a wide variety of styles from Argentina (Tango),  Belize (Chumba),  Bolivia(Andean) ,  Brazil (Samba),  Cuba (Mambo, Salsa, Rhumba), Colombia (Cumbia), Dominican Republic (Merengue),  Mexico (Boleros) , Peru (Marinera).

They can be used for background music or for dancin. The band’s electric set list is passionate, dynamic and eminently danceable which covers characteristically hot blooded tempos of Cuban Salsa and Brazilian Lambada, the traditional folk rhythms of Colombia and also Merengue from Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic.

Son Latin has toured France, Italy, Spain, and Tunisia. The band has performed for personalities such as Prince Charles, for musicians such as, Elton John, Eric Clapton, and for stars of film and television including Joan Collins, Roger Moore. And has become a spicy ingredient at hotels, clubs and many pop stars’ parties.

Son Latin is a very well known band in the United Kingdom spreading the Latin fever from small to big audiences. They have been invited to appear at El Carnaval del Pueblo Festival, The Barbican Centre, The South Bank and The Edinburgh festival plus several TV shows.
