The North London four piece fill the stage with not only instruments, but energy and charisma. Banjo, cello, guitars and keys create a sound not unfamiliar in the burgeoning nu-folk scene, but Amber States manage to steer clear of the hackneyed fiddle and guitar style that has become so popular and instead carve their own sound and produce a short but life-affirmingly magnetic set that gets the biggest crowd and the loudest cheer of the night. Their set is laden with catchy hooks, dreamy melodies, exhilarating builds and a toe tapping rhythms without being too paint by numbers folk, with lead singer Gavin Bell’s smoky vocals adding a rawness that sits perfectly over the top.” Amelia’s Magazine.

www.petelawrie.com

When Pete Lawrie says that “I don’t see myself as a guitar-wielding troubadour type,” that’s because he’s a multi-skilled musician who knows how to adapt to the challenges of the digital age. As his debut album ‘A Little Brighter’ demonstrates, Lawrie’s music draws from rock, folk, soul and hip-hop, creating evocative, melodic songs from a blend of “real” instruments, loops and samples. Pulling it all together is his husky but soulful voice, which sometimes gets compared to the likes of Ray Lamontagne or Paolo Nutini. Whatever, it’s the perfect instrument for introspective ballads, while also being poised to unleash a powerful rock’n’roll blast at an instant’s notice.

From an early age, he always felt certain he would have a musical career, though considering that he grew up in a house full of music perhaps that wasn’t altogether surprising. The catch line “born on Penny Lane, bred in Penarth” has attached itself to Lawrie, who was indeed born in Liverpool, where his musician-parents both played the oboe in the Liverpool Philharmonic. The family later moved to Wales. “My mum now plays the oboe in the Welsh National Opera. My dad got fed up with playing the oboe professionally and he hated touring, so he gave it up and now he makes parts for instruments, like oboe reeds. I never wanted to play the oboe, because to me it always sounds like somebody strangling a duck.”

He first came to the attention of the music biz when he formed a band called The Lawries, which also featured the two school friends who still play with him today, drummer Elliot Wall and bassist Mike Shankleman.

One of Pete’s earliest supporters was Radio 1’s Rob da Bank, who apparently thought The Lawries were quite good, but his career only started heading in the right direction after he spent some time writing songs on his own and trying to work out “a sound I was happy with”. He wrote a song called Just Dust (which appears on the new album) and put it up on his MySpace page, and again found himself attracting interest from labels and music publishers. The upshot of this was a contract with Rollo Armstrong’s Field label, a subsidiary of Island Records, which Pete signed in 2008. His debut album has been slowly evolving ever since.

He has found that collaborating with other artists is a brilliant way of letting off steam and getting back to the musical basics. He has a project called River Kids with Tennessee’s own Lauren Pritchard, which is an opportunity to get together and make hip-hop cover versions.

“We both love hip-hop, but she’s really hardcore, she loves Snoop Dogg and Eminen and gangsta rap,” Lawrie says. “We could easily have covered some Neil Young songs or something which would have suited our voices, but I thought was a boring idea, so we started doing hip-hop covers instead.”

Some of their collaborative efforts appear on Lawrie’s All That We Keep EP, an early taster for the album, where they cover Jay-Z’s Song Cry. Also on the EP are Pete’s own remixes of the title track under different monikers, as well as a hook-up with Fyfe Dangerfield on The Penny Drop.

“For years I wanted to be a footballer,” he recalls. “It was only ever a footballer, film star or rock star for me.” Most likely to be the last one, the way things are going.

Pete Lawrie’s ‘All That We Keep’ EP is out on the 16th August 2010 through Island Records.
