A Season of Danish Music in London The Danish Cultural Institute in Britain proudly presents Springtime in London – the season of Danish music during April and May will be featuring Danish Radio’s Vocal Ensemble and several of Denmark’s foremost classical musicians who will be performing at two of the most attractive venues in London, St John’s, Smith Square and Wigmore Hall. Danish Radio’s Vocal Ensemble will be performing at St John’s, Smith Square in London on the 20th April at 7.30 pm led by the British conductor, Stephen Layton. They will be performing Poulenc’s highly challenging choral works as well as Carl Nielsen’s Latin motets and music by the Danish contemporary composer Niels La Cour. The award-winning Trio con Brio Copenhagen will be making their first Wigmore Hall appearance with a concert on Sunday 4th May at 7.30 pm. Trio con Brio Copenhagen have become one of Denmark’s most sought after ensembles with performances both at home and abroad. The prizes won by the trio include the ARD in Germany and most recently the prestigious American prize, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award, which also features a concert tour of 20 venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall. The works to be performed in Wigmore Hall include “Phantasmagoria” by the Danish composer Bent Sørensen. The three acclaimed Danish musicians who comprise Den Danske Horntrio, the violinist Christina Åstrand, the horn player Jacob Keiding and the pianist Per Salo, will be performing at St John’s, Smith Square in London the 29th April at 7.30 pm. This hugely talented young trio will be performing works by Abrahamsen, Nielsen and Brahms. Their CD recordings as The Danish Horn Trio has received much praise. The members of the trio have also made their name individually as very talented musicians. Christina Åstrand was just 22 years old when she became Principal Concert Master with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and has since won numerous awards, including the Danish Music Critics’ Artist’s Prize, the Jacob Gade Prize and the Rhein von Hauen Prize. Jacob Keiding is Principal Solo horn player in the Sealand Symphony Orchestra and as such he has toured extensively in Denmark and abroad. Per Salo is employed by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has been awarded numerous prizes and grants and has performed with concerts throughout Europe and in the United States. Master ClassesIn addition to these three concerts, the Danish Cultural Institute in Britain is arranging two master classes for music students at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tutorship of the Danish composers Bent Sørensen and Niels Rosing-Schou.
