Dear music industry types, here is The Good Ship’s offering for July, comedy every Monday and live music of many genres every other night. We are a bit top heavy with post rock, Battles, Mogwai shoegaze type fare this month so if that is your bag you are in luck but as ever we have a wide variety with folk, soul, hiphop, pop, postpunk and lots more. Plus the 22nd July sees the return of The Good Ship Pop Quiz which isn’t just for Pet Shop Boys fans.

My main tips for the month are…

Tessellators on the 3rd A great, great band. Blessed with masses of ideas, intelligence, passion, atmosphere and delicacy their songs demand to be cherished.

Felicity Groom on the 4th Fresh from Glastonbury is this Aussie singing sensation on a short tour of the UK. Country, folk and melody a la Wheeler and Wainwright.

The Slow Blade on the 11th Only been around for five minutes but already attracting lots of attention to their Editors/ Joy Division inspired noise.

The Screenbeats on the 17th Now here is a rarity. A band that is a bit moddish but with a girl lead singer. Crazy. And what a singer, it is like having a Motown diva in a garage band, really.

Tomokiyo on the 23rd A charming disregard for fashion, quirkiness, angularity from this new London threesome. Just songs, ace ones, guilty pleasures in the vein of Supertramp and Joe Jackson.

The Good Ship is also available for private functions, single or video launches (we have a cinema size screen) and whatever other excuse people need. We are always interested in speaking with promoters who want to put on interesting acts and we open til 2am during the week and 4am during the weekend. Please ask sooner rather than later though as dates go quickly.

Tessellators www.myspace.com/tessellators Tessellators are the interface between catchy, immediate songs and the sort of wild ideas that a muso’s dreams are made of. Or to put it another way they provide “warped pop music packed with melodies and frequent left-turns and sing songs of adventure on the sea and in the city, with plans to release 3 themed EPs within a 2 year period (2 down, one to go)”.

The Tupolev Ghost www.myspace.com/thetupolevghost The Tupolev Ghost are a post-hardcore/post-rock band that owe a lot more to the catchiness of Hot Snakes and At the Drive-In than that tired label might suggest. They come from Cambridge and their second EP has just been released by Disjuncture records:

Oroku Saki no website Named after the real name of TMNT’s Shredder, they’ve never been heard by anyone and never performed live before. As such no description or link to their music is on offer but the members have a history of very good projects.

Felicity Groom www.myspace.com/felicitygroom Felicity Groom is a singer songwriter from the west coast of Australia, playing a kind of dark folk music heavily inspired by blokes like Nick Cave, Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen; and ladies like Kate Bush, Francois Hardy and Melanie.
