Appeal for Deansfield Primary School Music Room

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

I would be grateful if you could take the time to write a letter or e-mail in support of our cause. It would be a shame for all these young musicians to lose the superior training they receive at this school because of a stupid decision by a council official.

Thank You for your support

Deansfield Primary School
Dairsie Road, Eltham, London SE9 1XP
Greenwich council have decided to remove the mobile classroom which has for some years been used as the music room.  The classroom will be moved to the School Journey centre at Wrotham to replace an existing classroom block.
The school is naturally very upset at this decision: The music produced in this school is of a very high standard, as the audience at Blackheath Halls for the recent Windows Project concert will testify.  This standard would not have been possible without a dedicated music room.
At the school, there are currently 120 children learning violin, flute, clarinet, drums, recorder and guitar and music teacher Mr David Moore has exciting plans to further extend this provision.
The children benefit enormously from the music on offer, both in the enjoyment of singing and playing but also in the increase of their self confidence and self esteem.  In many instances learning music has had a positive impact on their progress in literacy and mathematics.
It is very difficult to see how such a costly move can make economic sense, putting in jeopardy a centre of excellence which has achieved so much.
Please write to Greenwich expressing your opposition to this proposal!

White Heat Live Listings

Tuesday July 22nd - £5 Adv. £6 Door
Jeremy Warmsley + We Have Band + Akira
Mr Warmsley’s not yet played White Heat despite almost playing on at least one earlier occasion. He’s about to release his second album on Transgressive (home of Foals, The Young Knives etc.). Musically think folky but with more than a dash of electronic. Say Drowned in Sound: “live appearances are wildly unpredictable …he has played as many times with his seven-piece backing band the LMNOPs (including laptop-ist and trombone section) as he has on his own.”
Akira, too mix the twee and the electronic but to a dancier effect while WHB have suddenly sprouted from all venues in London at once with an attempt straight for the Hot Chip electro jugular.

Shiraz Revisited

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

For years it’s been sitting in the archives of the British Film Institute. But now the classic 1928 silent film Shiraz has been dusted off and given a new lease of life as the renowned Sabri Ensemble create a specially commissioned score, to be performed live on Thursday 10 July at this year’s Lichfield Festival.

Set in the Mughal Empire during the 17th century, Shiraz tells of the powerful romance which inspired the building of the Taj Mahal. It is an epic story of love, mistaken identity and devotion that tells the tale of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, her lover, the 17th century Mughal emperor, and her devoted brother, Shiraz, who designs the Taj Mahal.

The film’s screening  will be accompanied by an especially commissioned score performed by the Sabri Ensemble, who draw upon the dynamic and creative energy released when the Indian classical tradition meets traditions from other parts of the world.

This promises to be a truly one-off event! For more information about Shiraz and The Lichfield Festival take a look at www.lichfieldfestival.org

Shiraz was commissioned by the Lichfield Festival in collaboration with sampad

South Asian Cultural Festival

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Europe’s largest South Asian cultural festival is back, featuring spectacular performances from hundreds of artists.

Last year’s London Mela attracted 65,000 visitors and this year’s event is set to be the best yet. Expect a vibrant, one day festival with seven entertainment areas and something to appeal to every generation and community.

From the main stage, which is supported by BBC Asian Network and features international Bollywood superstars alongside leading British Asian artists, through to the Classical Stage and Heritage Maidaan, the London Mela has something to appeal to everyone.

Other stages include the London Flavas Stage, presented by BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, the Indo Electronica stage, BBC Asian Network Mix Tent and the Community Cabaret Stage.

Children and the young at heart will love the free arts and interactive entertainment of the Magic Mela area as well as the enormous funfair.

The food market features cuisine from around the world, including the tastiest array of South Asian food that you will find at any UK festival. Also, make sure you check out the craft market and business exchange.

Gigs at the Good Ship

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Dear music industry types, here is The Good Ship’s offering for July, comedy every Monday and live music of many genres every other night.  We are a bit top heavy with post rock, Battles, Mogwai shoegaze type fare this month so if that is your bag you are in luck but as ever we have a wide variety with folk, soul, hiphop, pop, postpunk and lots more.  Plus the 22nd July sees the return of The Good Ship Pop Quiz which isn’t just for Pet Shop Boys fans.

cheers
John

If you would like any industry guest list tickets for any event then please get in touch.  Full contact details are at the bottom.

My main tips for the month are…
Tessellators on the 3rd  A great, great band. Blessed with masses of ideas, intelligence, passion, atmosphere and delicacy their songs demand to be cherished.
Felicity Groom on the 4th Fresh from Glastonbury is this Aussie singing sensation on a short tour of the UK.  Country, folk and melody a la Wheeler and Wainwright.
The Slow Blade on the 11th Only been around for five minutes but already attracting lots of attention to their Editors/ Joy Division inspired noise.
The Screenbeats on the 17th Now here is a rarity. A band that is a bit moddish but with a girl lead singer.  Crazy.  And what a singer, it is like having a Motown diva in a garage band, really.
Tomokiyo on the 23rd A charming disregard for fashion, quirkiness, angularity from this new London threesome.  Just songs, ace ones, guilty pleasures in the vein of Supertramp and Joe Jackson.

The Good Ship is also available for private functions, single or video launches (we have a cinema size screen) and whatever other excuse people need.  We are always interested in speaking with promoters who want to put on interesting acts and we open til 2am during the week and 4am during the weekend.  Please ask sooner rather than later though as dates go quickly.

24 nights of music, 4 of comedy.  Full live list for the month…

Pocus Whiteface present a night of math-tinged, post-hardcore Pixies-like pop noise.
Pocus Whiteface www.myspace.com/pocuswhiteface Headliners Pocus Whiteface have picked the other bands playing tonight to keep a single feel to the night. Pocus Whiteface like to combine strange time signatures, post-hardcore guitar noise and easy-to-hum melodies with lyrics about evil sea-creatures, mafia snitches, spam emails and physics…and the occasional girl.
Tessellators www.myspace.com/tessellators Tessellators are the interface between catchy, immediate songs and the sort of wild ideas that a muso’s dreams are made of. Or to put it another way they provide “warped pop music packed with melodies and frequent left-turns and sing songs of adventure on the sea and in the city, with plans to release 3 themed EPs within a 2 year period (2 down, one to go)”.
The Tupolev Ghost www.myspace.com/thetupolevghost The Tupolev Ghost are a post-hardcore/post-rock band that owe a lot more to the catchiness of Hot Snakes and At the Drive-In than that tired label might suggest. They come from Cambridge and their second EP has just been released by Disjuncture records:
Oroku Saki no website Named after the real name of TMNT’s Shredder, they’ve never been heard by anyone and never performed live before. As such no description or link to their music is on offer but the members have a history of very good projects.

Live Music Competitions

Friday, June 20th, 2008

As part of its mission to maximise the visitor experience, Event UK has launched a search for exceptionally talented acts who are looking to break into the corporate entertainment and party scene.

The shortlisted finalists will perform for a panel of judges and interactive voting audience on the Next Big Thing stage at Event UK, which runs from 16-17 September at the NEC Birmingham.
In association with Sternberg Clarke, the Next Big Thing is part of Event UK’s commitment to enhancing the visitor experience and making a thoroughly enjoyable show, while supporting the industry from both sides and encouraging new talent into the sector.

Not only will shortlisted entries have the chance to perform at Event UK, but a contract with top entertainment industry agent Sternberg Clarke is also up for grabs. Moreover, the winner will also get a stand to promote themselves at International Confex 09, and the opportunity to perform at the International Confex 09 Exhibitor Party.
Duncan Reid, Confex Group event director, explains.
‘Event UK brings together an eclectic mix of exhibitors and visitors representing the industry’s movers and shakers, which is why it is the perfect launch platform for the Next Big Thing.
‘We’re looking for a wide range of acts who can bring something fresh and innovative to the corporate entertainment sector. For entrants it is an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents to industry insiders, whilst for event organisers it offers the chance to see something a bit different and give them some inspiration - which has always been the underlining objective of Event UK.’

Event UK features more than 350 exhibitors and a daily seminar programme tailored to the hot topics in the industry. It is a great place to do business, meet new contacts and find inspiration for your next event.

Bollywood Event

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

We are currently organising a Bollywood Ball in aid of Diabetes UK in Derby and are on the look out for dancers and drummers.  We don’t have a very large budget for this but I wondered if you may have any contacts whom could possibly help us out.  I’d be very grateful for any help you might be able to offer.

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes
