Whelan’s London

Social Responsibility Note to All London Giging Musicians

Ok this is really interesting. An article from the Irish Post. I have copied and posted it as well incase it is deleted.

http://www.irishpost.co.uk/tabId/550/itemId/2878/Whelans-music-scene-set-for-London.aspx

If Whelans London is not part of Whelans London this should bring up an interesting copyright and trademark infringement case.

I have been told that Whelans Dublin is seeking legal advice.

Also the cheque for the part payment on the day bounced, I will posting the scanned cheque shortly.

IRELAND’S best known live music venue is to open a second home in Britain.

Whelan’s, the pub that is synonymous with Wexford Street, is applying the finishing touches to a venue in north London which will closely mirror the popular Dublin nightspot.

Speaking of the opening Sam Sanders of Whelan’s said: “Our plan is to get this venue up and running and then open a second Whelan’s in London and hopefully one in New York. We think Whelan’s will be a big success here, there is definitely a market for the type of venue we will become and the brand of live acts who will be performing here.”

This weekend in Islington popular act Róisín Dubh will get proceedings under way and with a late licence until 2am every weekend, it’s expected that there will be no shortage of craic in north London.

But according to Sanders, success will be about more than that: “We will be offering freshly cooked Irish food and already we’ve been told that we have a good pint of Guinness. And we will have a similar décor to the Whelan’s in Dublin. Put it this way, we won’t be going down the cliché Irish pub route.”

Whelan’s originally opened in Dublin 20 years ago in 1989 and has become one of the names on the city’s live music circuit in recent years. It has been home to artists such as Christy Moore, Jens Lekman and Grammy-nominated Clare folk singer Maura O’Connell.

The London venue will open Saturday, May 30 at 60 Copenhagen Street, N1 0JW. Contact 020 7278 5781 for further details.

Whelans London Not Part of Whelans Ireland

Social Responsibility Note to All London Giging Musicians

I decided to write to Whelans Ireland since Nadya’s partner mentioned they were part of the largest live music pub in Ireland and it was normal for musicians there to play for 3 hours. These are the emails, please read from below.

Hi Darren,

Thanks for your reply. Its much appreciated, I will put the word out to the musicians in London about this as I can imagine lots of issues coming up. We don’t want your name to get dragged into this. Its sad that the owner are riding on your good name and shortchanging musicians here.

Best Regards
Titus

Hi Titus,

Whelan’s in Dublin has been owned by Frank Gleeson since 1999 and has nothing to do with the set up of Whelan’s in London. If they are part of a chain it has nothing to do with us but thanks for informing us of the situation. We’ll keep an eye on it and good luck chasing payment for your act, Whelan’s in Dublin is well renowned throughout the world and we do not have a policy of short changing hard working musicians.

Hi Darren,

They mentioned they are part of a chain from Ireland, would you think they are using your name illegally?

They booked our Gypsy Kings tribute band from 9 - 12 for £900,00 but paid only £450.00 because the band did not play for the full 3 hours, the owner said they were part of the biggest live music pub in Ireland and its normal for bands to play 3 hours non stop. I don’t think this is the case anywhere in the world.

Its only normal a 3 hour booking includes breaks.

We allowed them to book the band without a deposit based on the merits of Whelans in Dublin. The persons name is Nadya Gaughran.

Any help appreciated.

Kind Regards

Titus

Bad Debts Irish Pub Whelans Nadya Gaughran

Social Responsibility Note to All London Giging Musicians

This is a note to all musicians in London who intend to perform at Whelans. Most pubs as we know are fair to musicians but ever so often we find one that will short change us.  Sad to say this is one of them. Please ensure you take your money upfront when performing at Whelans. Please be aware of this Irish  pub chain operating in in Copenhagen Street London and run by a lady called Nadya Gaughran.  They will pay you half after you have performed. Their excuse would be you did not perform for the full three hours  non stop.

They booked a Gypsy Kings tribute band from 9.00pm - 12.00 am. I had given them the option of 3×30 minutes or 2×45 minutes but they did not choose either. I allowed for them to decide on the night. The band performed one and a half hours non stop as the owners did not want breaks. At the end of the night the client only paid half  (£450) the agreed fee of £900.00 for a five piece band.

She said there would be press there and we would get good publicity and wanted a bigger discount from our original price of £1200.00.

This was a last minute booking and she kept avoiding me about sending the contract back but assured me everything was in order and she was busy at the pub. When I called the day before the gig, her partner at the pub told me she had left her phone and gone out.

This is a classic example of a promoter pub owner who probably did not make their targeted income thus came up with an excuse about the band not performing non stop for 3 hours.

She was extremely rude to me  and hung up the phone when I called her when the musicians had let me know that she did not want to pay up. When I called her number again, her partner said she had left the pub (he refused to give his name) he assured me he would call me back the next day and resolve the matter, of course that call has still not come from him or any other Whelan Pub Staff.

After 7 years of booking musicians, this was the first client that actually came up with this excuse.  Quiet original, I hope no other musicians or music agents are victims of this. Below is her email confirming the booking.

Gigs at the Good Ship

July 1, 2008 by MFL
Filed under Londons Live Music News

Dear music industry types, here is The Good Ship’s offering for July, comedy every Monday and live music of many genres every other night.  We are a bit top heavy with post rock, Battles, Mogwai shoegaze type fare this month so if that is your bag you are in luck but as ever we have a wide variety with folk, soul, hiphop, pop, postpunk and lots more.  Plus the 22nd July sees the return of The Good Ship Pop Quiz which isn’t just for Pet Shop Boys fans.

cheers
John

If you would like any industry guest list tickets for any event then please get in touch.  Full contact details are at the bottom.

My main tips for the month are…
Tessellators on the 3rd  A great, great band. Blessed with masses of ideas, intelligence, passion, atmosphere and delicacy their songs demand to be cherished.
Felicity Groom on the 4th Fresh from Glastonbury is this Aussie singing sensation on a short tour of the UK.  Country, folk and melody a la Wheeler and Wainwright.
The Slow Blade on the 11th Only been around for five minutes but already attracting lots of attention to their Editors/ Joy Division inspired noise.
The Screenbeats on the 17th Now here is a rarity. A band that is a bit moddish but with a girl lead singer.  Crazy.  And what a singer, it is like having a Motown diva in a garage band, really.
Tomokiyo on the 23rd A charming disregard for fashion, quirkiness, angularity from this new London threesome.  Just songs, ace ones, guilty pleasures in the vein of Supertramp and Joe Jackson.

The Good Ship is also available for private functions, single or video launches (we have a cinema size screen) and whatever other excuse people need.  We are always interested in speaking with promoters who want to put on interesting acts and we open til 2am during the week and 4am during the weekend.  Please ask sooner rather than later though as dates go quickly.

24 nights of music, 4 of comedy.  Full live list for the month…

Mlini www.myspace.com/wearemlini Mlini play carefully crafted catchy songs with a dirty lo-fi edge. From clean measured & precise, to raw, ragged and falling apart at the seams.
Gestir www.myspace.com/gestir Best of the bunch, though, may yet be the intensely compelling, laser-souled Gestir, a quintet of hefty, swirling arrangements that recall those moments of glory and gloom that once made Radiohead such a remarkable band whilst simultaneously drawing comparisons with Elbow in their more plangent moments. -The Fly
After James Tarbit (dancetillyoudie) playing a mix of electronica, leftfield beats and indie/dance crossover and forgotten pop classics until 4am.

Doors 730pm.  £5 entry.

The Rigmarole www.myspace.com/therigmarole Seb’s live shows tend to be frenzied and energetic affairs, propelled mainly by sheer nervousness. Rigmarole gigs are a foot-stomping, chord-fumbling, finger-lacerating extravaganza, and he’s normally in need of a lie down afterwards.

northwest garage influences firmly on their grubby sleeves.
Boydidgood www.myspace.com/boydidgood This tight Reading 4 piece have an incredible stage presence and amongst a rapidly evolving national music scene which seems to recklessly embrace the pretentious and churlishly alternative, Boydidgood stand out with a strikingly genuine and heartfelt belief in their music which they love to write, record and play.

The Screenbeats www.myspace.com/thescreenbeats With one foot in the very height of 60s psychedelia, and the other firmly in the angular modern indie camp, The Screenbeats are absolutely bloody belting.  Imagine The Libertines walking hand in hand down Carnaby Street with Martha and the Vandellas and you’ll get the idea…
Afterwards the dancetillyoudie DJs and art.war VJs entertain with indie, electro, rock, punk, breaks and beats, somersaults and cartwheels until 2am…perhaps without the somersaults and cartwheels…
