Bad Debts Irish Pub Whelans Nadya Gaughran

Social Responsibility Note to All London Giging Musicians

This is a note to all musicians in London who intend to perform at Whelans. Most pubs as we know are fair to musicians but ever so often we find one that will short change us.  Sad to say this is one of them. Please ensure you take your money upfront when performing at Whelans. Please be aware of this Irish  pub chain operating in in Copenhagen Street London and run by a lady called Nadya Gaughran.  They will pay you half after you have performed. Their excuse would be you did not perform for the full three hours  non stop.

They booked a Gypsy Kings tribute band from 9.00pm - 12.00 am. I had given them the option of 3×30 minutes or 2×45 minutes but they did not choose either. I allowed for them to decide on the night. The band performed one and a half hours non stop as the owners did not want breaks. At the end of the night the client only paid half  (£450) the agreed fee of £900.00 for a five piece band.

She said there would be press there and we would get good publicity and wanted a bigger discount from our original price of £1200.00.

This was a last minute booking and she kept avoiding me about sending the contract back but assured me everything was in order and she was busy at the pub. When I called the day before the gig, her partner at the pub told me she had left her phone and gone out.

This is a classic example of a promoter pub owner who probably did not make their targeted income thus came up with an excuse about the band not performing non stop for 3 hours.

She was extremely rude to me  and hung up the phone when I called her when the musicians had let me know that she did not want to pay up. When I called her number again, her partner said she had left the pub (he refused to give his name) he assured me he would call me back the next day and resolve the matter, of course that call has still not come from him or any other Whelan Pub Staff.

After 7 years of booking musicians, this was the first client that actually came up with this excuse.  Quiet original, I hope no other musicians or music agents are victims of this. Below is her email confirming the booking.

Dear Musicians,
I have set up a childrens charity called Millie Mittoo Childrens Projects - please see website at www.milliemittoochildrensprojects.com
( we have just been officially registered as a charity - website should be fully updated by the end of next week) and was wondering if you would be interested in participating in a fundraising musical evening some time in January 2009.
I am only at the very initial stages of planning and am trying in the first instance to cost the event. I have no other details at present other than to say it would be at a venue in London.
If you are interested I would be very grateful if you would please advise of your rates and if you would be willing to make any concession on the basis that it is to be a charity event to raise money to fund a small children’s home in Pakistan.  Please also advise of any dates of availability or non availability ( which ever is easiest).
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your time in reading/considering my request.
Best regards,
Yours sincerely,
Nina

Composing Work for TV

July 30, 2008 by MFL

Music companies keep flooding me with the wrong music. What I need is a two minute piece for the chase sequence that escalates in speed along with the chase.”
“It’s a cookery show, so we just need some incidental music while they do the bulk of cooking before the countdown begins.”
“Its British, the whole film has got a British feel so the music has to be current and British sounding, some new bands or singers so we don’t have to rely on our own musical knowledge.”
“I’ve gone through so many CDs now I just want to sit down with a composer and go look mate, this is what I want from this scene. I want the music in this bit to go dah dah dahhh da-da type thing.  There must be someone out there that can make this bit easy.”
Each month, every single one of the 200 films and television programmes we list moving in to preproduction not only needs music but is about to ACTIVELY START LOOKING FOR MUSIC. The new issue of Advance Production News magazine is out, listing all television and film productions with a budget, moving from development into preproduction. Producers from each production are about to start looking for crew, make-up, set, locations, graphics, DOPs and the usual ensemble that form the family of each production.
There are, as usual, 200 productions in this issue. Remember we don’t pad out issues by repeating information, we only list new productions each month all budgeted, all with contact name, phone no, fax no, shoot dates, synopsis - everything you need to make contact without being out in the cold not knowing what production you and they want to talk about. APN is who and what you know, so if you’re hanging on waiting for news to filter down from your favourite old mate, cross your fingers that an APN reader doesn’t clinch the deal way before you hear about it.
With Eight years of issues under our belt, production companies often come to us to let us know what they are about to shoot, so you can deliver exactly what they are looking for into their hands just as they are about to start looking for exactly what you are about to offer.
We don’t list student films, profit share, rubbish or dreamy productions by the deluded that will never see the light of day.
If you would like to get your name into their awareness before they begin searching, Advance Production News magazine lists them all, with contact details, phone, fax no, address, synopsis and dates of shoot.
Subscribe to the magazine for production details, including shoot date, contact name, phone, fax no’s, address, and programme information.
Each monthly issue of APN brings our subscribers information on all television and films about to be made in the UK, including overseas companies coming here to shoot and new production companies starting up.
