Five Star Scotsman Review http://living.scotsman.com/features?articleid=4296217
Press Release – The Long Notes
Described by the Scotsman in a five-star review as ‘truly something else’, The Long Notes unite the revered talents of accordionist Colette O’Leary, fiddler Jamie Smith and banjo and mandolin player Brian Kelly. All three musicians have a wealth of touring experience and came together as a group through north London’s ever-vibrant folk scene.
The Long Notes’ ensemble synergy magically surpasses the sum of its parts, with captivating arrangements of Scottish, Irish, French, Galician, contemporary and original tunes, their playing “nothing short of sublime, the dance sets implausibly quick yet immaculately detailed, brilliantly intense yet utterly supple, silkily dovetailed in a thrilling panoply of colour, texture and taut-sprung rhythms”. (The Scotsman)
Colette’s playing is exquisite and heartfelt, honed through years of touring with the highly successful all-girl Irish folk group The Bumblebees. Together with Mary Shannon, Laoise Kelly and Liz Doherty, they enjoyed a rapturous
reception wherever they played; in the UK, Europe and the US.
Jamie Smith is a well-known fiddler who emerged through the Glasgow session scene before moving to London. He founded Celtic Connections favourites Beneche before recording his solo album which received great reviews.
He produced The Long Notes album in December 2007.
Brian Kelly has been a stalwart of the London Irish scene since he was twelve years old. He’s won multiple all-Ireland titles on banjo and mandolin and toured extensively with Shane McGowan and the Popes. His astoundingly
fleet-fingered playing never fails to thrill.
The Long Notes are delighted to be joined for this concert by their friend, guitarist and singer Steve Burns.

Talent Quest

WorldWideTalentQuest is now live! http://www.wwtq.net
We would like to make you aware of an exciting new site, developed in Australia, and launched worldwide. It is specifically for singers, musicians and has been developed to encourage the pursuit of music in all its forms.
It’s something fun and entertaining that the talent you represent can benefit from, in between gigs.
Jane Rutter, noted and internationally famous Australian flautist, tells this story: “Some time ago, I was asked to help judge a Piano competition, for young people in the Western Suburbs of Sydney, Australia. We were giving out music grants to help young players get a better opportunity through their music. As I approached the stage, one of the contestants, a young girl, was crying, arms folded over the keyboard. I asked her what was wrong. “I’ve never played on a real piano before,” she sobbed, “and this is a grand piano!” Right then I decided I would do everything in my power to help young musicians from all walks of life achieve their musical ambitions.”
Luke Gregory, legendary rock bass guitarist and composer, has a similar story: “Growing up in England, it was obvious that if you wanted to get out, to actually be able to get an opportunity to make it good in music, you either had to be connected, or rich. I got lucky, I got out, and I’ve taken my music with me all around the world. I want to give all those young people who play in their lounges, garages, or pay to play in pubs, the best chance of their music lives to make it big.”
If you have ever seen the look on the face of a young musician when they have “nailed’ a tough cord, hit that high note, or made music out of all those dots and lines, then you know what we mean when we say “Music is the soul of Life.”
Welcome to the WorldWideTalentQuest.
At the lower levels, we encourage musicians and singers to upload an audio file of their performance, then get as many friends and fans as possible to vote for it. In this manner, they can win music grants from $1,000 to $25,000 awarded by popular vote.
At the upper levels, we encourage the more serious musician to upload their performance, and be judged by members of our Professional Panel as well as by popular vote, for Bursaries and Scholarships worth up to $25,000.
Anyone with the slightest bit of musicality in their DNA can play the music game – all they have to do is upload, vote, and win!

Sing Gospel at the Royal Academy of Music
Sunday, 17th August at 2.30pm
Royal Academy of Music
Marylebone Road
London NW1 5HT
On August 24th the Olympic torch will be passed from Beijing to London. To celebrate, community choirs will lead mass sings at city centres and Live Sites and big screens across the country. Each City Sing lasts 15 minutes and forms part of the afternoon’s handover celebrations. The result will be the nation’s biggest sing-along.
You don’t have to be an opera buff… a pop diva or a crooner to attend…You just need to be up for some fun. Acclaimed gospel leader Ken Burton leads a taster workshop for everyone; people who love to sing; people who think they can’t. Ken Burton is the conductor of award winning London Adventist Chorale and MD of Croydon’s SDA Gospel Choir. Ken has worked with Carrie Grant, Heather Small, Jocelyn Brown, & Huw Edwards. As a song leader he has one aspiration: to help people sound good fast!

Appeal for Deansfield Primary School Music Room

I would be grateful if you could take the time to write a letter or e-mail in support of our cause. It would be a shame for all these young musicians to lose the superior training they receive at this school because of a stupid decision by a council official.
Thank You for your support

Greenwich council have decided to remove the mobile classroom which has for some years been used as the music room. The classroom will be moved to the School Journey centre at Wrotham to replace an existing classroom block.
The school is naturally very upset at this decision: The music produced in this school is of a very high standard, as the audience at Blackheath Halls for the recent Windows Project concert will testify. This standard would not have been possible without a dedicated music room.
At the school, there are currently 120 children learning violin, flute, clarinet, drums, recorder and guitar and music teacher Mr David Moore has exciting plans to further extend this provision.
The children benefit enormously from the music on offer, both in the enjoyment of singing and playing but also in the increase of their self confidence and self esteem. In many instances learning music has had a positive impact on their progress in literacy and mathematics.
It is very difficult to see how such a costly move can make economic sense, putting in jeopardy a centre of excellence which has achieved so much.
Please write to Greenwich expressing your opposition to this proposal!

Shiraz Revisited

For years it’s been sitting in the archives of the British Film Institute. But now the classic 1928 silent film Shiraz has been dusted off and given a new lease of life as the renowned Sabri Ensemble create a specially commissioned score, to be performed live on Thursday 10 July at this year’s Lichfield Festival.
Set in the Mughal Empire during the 17th century, Shiraz tells of the powerful romance which inspired the building of the Taj Mahal. It is an epic story of love, mistaken identity and devotion that tells the tale of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, her lover, the 17th century Mughal emperor, and her devoted brother, Shiraz, who designs the Taj Mahal.
The film’s screening will be accompanied by an especially commissioned score performed by the Sabri Ensemble, who draw upon the dynamic and creative energy released when the Indian classical tradition meets traditions from other parts of the world.
This promises to be a truly one-off event! For more information about Shiraz and The Lichfield Festival take a look at www.lichfieldfestival.org
