Reviews
FolkWorld - issue 33 - 05/2007
Both "Sounds & Shadows" and "Over the Village" are an exploration into the world of the travelling klezmer musicians of the Carpathian mountains. Artists who played on weddings, religious holidays and other festivities. It had been -- and still is -- a multic-cultural world: there were not only Jewish villages but also Bukovina highlanders, Hutsuls, Gypsies, Polish, Romanians, Hungarians, and many more. The Polish quartet Transkapela is digging into the music that had been played in the 19th and 20th century and is playing in the style of those bands that are lost and long forgotten…The travelling musicians have disappeared from the Carpathian scenery, however, Transkapela is able to beautifully revive the sights, sounds and ways of yore.
Tom Keller

Songlines - June 2006
Sounds and Shadows
/…/ What's appealing about the playing is the rough texture. The music has the feel of a peasant hut with wooden shingles. You feel you could get splinters from it. There's an organic scrape of bow on violin strings (Ewa Wasilewska), the nasal tone of a violin with a gramophone horn (Maciej Filipczuk), a sawing bass (Piotr Pniewski) and the earthy jangle of the cimbalom (Robert Wasilewski) - such a characteristic sound of Carpathian music...There's a real freshness about the music of Transkapela and they recently picked up award for Polish Folk Album of the Year.
It's an excellent and I bet they're great live!
Simon Broughton

fROOTS - June 2006
/…/ Transkapela purveys its own version of the sort of klezmer that was played in the 19th and 20th centuries by itinerant bands playing for weddings and celebrations in the towns and villages of the Carpathians, picking up tunes from the countries on that long mountain…It's knowing and conscious, a recreation, but they play not at all academically; the sound is pleasingly ragged but right, violin or phonofiddle sawing or singing over a cello that chugs an inexorable bass line pulse and a non-pedal cimbalom with a ringing, clanging clatter rather than the impeccably controlled sound of urban Roma bands' pedal cimbalom, there's plenty of variety of tempo and melody…
Andrew Cronshaw

Songlines - July/August 2007
Over the Village
We reviewed Transkapela's debut album Sounds and Shadows in June 2006 and said the rustic music from this Polish quartet had the rough-edged feel of "a peasant hut with wooden shingles". As if to confirm that, their new album comes with a fold-out sketch of a village complete with old photos of traditional dwellings. I don't know of many other bands in eastern Europe playing traditional music as compellingly as this and I hope they can get themselves invited to the sorts of festivals where such music is programmed and appreciated…
Simon Broughton
