Through Chinese immigration, the lion dance has spread across the world and still remains a huge part of Chinese Folk Culture.

Before the Han Dynasty, only a few lions had reached the Central Plains from XinJiang, the Western Region of China. Not unlike the Chinese Dragon, the lion was only an animal that existed deeply in myth as there were initially no real lions in China.

In 202 BC – 220 AD, people began to make their own interpretations of Lions, by mimicking the appearances as well as actions of them for entertainment purposes. This slowly and very gradually developed into the lion dance in the Three Kingdoms Period and grew popular with the rise of Buddhism in the Northern and Southern regions of China.

In the Tang Dynasty, the Lion Dance was one of the court official dances that took place regularly. It also began to symbolise Chinese Culture distinctively through depicting the prayers of good luck during the Spring and Blooming Seasons.

Chinese Martial Arts as well as Kung Fu play a big influence on the styles and methods of the Northern Lion Dance. The Red Theatre in Beijing and Shaolin Temple are still home to some of the best interpretations of the Contempo dance.

Having said that, the Northern Lion Dance is comparatively one of the most dynamic, consisting of many diverse, difficult, and risky stunts. Guangdong is the home to the Southern style of Lion dance, it is performed more in the hometowns of China as well as Macau, Hong Kong. It portrays the more specific actions of a Lion, its behaviour as well as more intimate moments
