Opera Singers are specialised and skilled performers who train extensively in music and theatre to perform the Opera. A celebrated and demanding dramatic art form that combines musical score and text. Their particular and unusual set of skills arises from the demands of their art form. An opera is a combination of both music and theatre. Opera singers are required to do a lot more than just sing. They merge their astounding musical skill with impressive acting as well as mobility to bring the work of composers to life.

Whether cast as an operatic soloist or chorus member, the singer’s work on a production begins with rehearsals, in which the performers focus on the interpretation and reading of the text almost as if it were a play. Soloists, chorus members, and the orchestra gather regularly for separate music rehearsals that are led by a conductor. In weeks leading up to the final performance, opera singers may spend up to six hours a day rehearsing!

There are a wide variety of different types of opera singers. A Soprano is a type of classical singing female voice that has the highest vocal range of all voice types. In music that is written in four parts, the Soprano is the highest. The term derives from the Italian sopra (“above”) and corresponds to the earlier Latin term superius. Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Mirella Freni and many more Italian Opera performers paved the way for many other talented singers in Opera through the inspiration of their work throughout the decades. Opera was born in Italy around the year 1600, and Italian Opera has continued to play a dominant role in the history of the form until the present day.

“Largo al factotum” is one of the most profound and popular operatic compositions. It is sung as the first entry in the opera ‘The Barber of Seville’ by well-known composer Rossini. Despite it being one of the most challenging compositions for a baritone to perform, it is still used in the comedy animated series ‘Tom and Jerry’.
