Individually, band members have worked with Brendan Cole of Strictly Come Dancing, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Brian May, Will Young, Jamelia, Gabriella Cilmi, Adam Ant, The Feeling, Sandie Shaw, 10cc, Joy Division and have appeared at The Hammersmith Apollo, Birmingham NEC, Leads 02 Academy, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Birmingham Rock City, Royal Festival Hall, Jumeirah Beach Dubai and countless other venues.
Electric Dreams can be booked as a compact 4-piece but can be augmented to a 10-piece band to include brass, percussion and additional lead vocalists. Top 10 Most Asked Wedding Band Questions.
Planning a wedding can be a huge challenge. Booking the right band is one of the key
elements in making your reception a night to remember. You may have never booked a
live band before, so… what are the top 10 questions you should ask them?
1. How long have you being playing at weddings?
Ask the band how long they have been performing together. Naturally, the greater their
(combined) experience of weddings the more skilled they will be at controlling the flow of
the event and the more likely they’ll be professional and presentable on the day.
2. Can I come and see you play before I decide to book?
You can ask the band if it is possible to go and see them play, but of course it is not always
possible to arrange this because the majority of their performances will be private events
– such as weddings! Most professional bands and agents therefore provide a demo that
you can listen to, usually available on their website. The quality of the band demo is very
important; as well as demonstrating their skill as musicians, the closer it sounds to a
commercial CD the more money they have invested in the band. The newest trend is for
bands to also have a video that shows them performing live. This is definitely the next best
thing, so be sure to ask if they have one if it is not already available on the web.
3. Do you have your own equipment?
It’s a good idea to read what the band say about their P.A. and lighting equipment. Most
bands will a have a portable P.A. system that will perfectly adequate for most weddings and
events. For bigger scale events it is important to liaise with the band about what equipment
they have and if it is suitable for your venue. Depending on the size of the band and how
may guests you have it may be appropriate to hire in a larger P.A. system (which the band
can supervise) to enhance the performance. The band’s contract will usually specify details
such as how many power sockets they require although this is rarely a problem.
4. How long do you need to set up?
When it comes to the logistics of the day you will need to consider how long it will take
for the band to set up. This is an important question, so talk with the band and the venue,
but most bands will say it takes them up to an hour to set up. This can often depend on
the loading access to the venue and the availability of the space they will be performing in.
Often the room that the band will be performing in will be being used for something else
before they set up (such as a wedding breakfast) – so tell them. Every piece of information
that can be passed between you and the band helps to make the day run smoother.
5. Does your quote include travel expenses?
Before you book a band you should consider where the band is based and where you
have booked your wedding. Transporting all the band members and equipment over large
distances can have a noticeable impact on the quote you receive. Most experienced bands
are based around big cities, so if the setting for your wedding is in a remote location it is
important to factor in that you may have to pay some expenses. Look at the band’s starting fee and
expect to add some expenses to this, plus if the band are traveling over 150 miles
some accommodation may be required.
6. How long do you play for?
You should find out from the band how long they play as standard; normally bands play
somewhere in the region of 2×60 mins or 3×40 mins and if you require longer than this they
may ask for an additional charge. When considering how long you want the band to play
it is worth thinking realistically about how much time you have to fill and also how much
and when your guests will want to dance. For example, nobody wants to dance straight
after they have eaten a large meal! Letting your guests have time for their food to go down
will maximise your chosen bands playing time and keep the party atmosphere as high as
possible. Bear in mind that bands are effectively the experts on this subject, meaning that
their suggestions for how long sets should be, how short the gaps should be between sets
etc. is based on probably hundreds of weddings and so is worth listening to.
7. Do you take requests and what will your set be like?
Be sure to ask the band for their song list if it isn’t already available on their or their agent’s
website. If you have a specific idea about the style of music or specific songs you want to
hear you should decide this before you book a band and choose one with closest set list. It
might seem obvious but if you want to hear only heavy metal ballads and you book a band
that specialise in 70s disco they may have a tough time meeting your requirements! In fact
of course, they would say it isn’t possible if asked, but it best to find this out before you book
because people sometimes assume that their band will be able to play any style of music,
or to add new songs on the night. In actual fact any new songs will of course have to be
carefully learned in advance of your event. Most bands advise you to leave as much freedom
for them to play what works best; on the whole this is good advice because they are the
experts in pleasing mixed crowds but this must be inkeeping with your expectations.
8. Will you play our first dance?
You should talk to the band in advance about your first dance to see if it suits a live
performance. Bands will often be happy to play your first dance live, but if possible give
them plenty of time to rehearse the song, say a minimum of two weeks before the event.
If there is something very particular about your choice of first dance that the band cannot
reproduce live (like a full orchestra!) then the band will probably recommend that it would
be best to ask the DJ to play it, or will offer to play it from an iPod through their P.A. system.
This is more common than you may think – imagine, for instance, that the band doesn’t have
a female singer and your first dance is I Will Always Love You by Whitney Huston. This may
be fine but it is unlikely that it would sound that similar to the original record!
9. What happens if a band member is unwell?
It might be worth asking the band what their procedure is if one of their musicians falls ill.
It is of course important that your chosen band has a list of back up musicians in case one
of the members breaks their arm the day before the gig! Most professional bands will have
a network of musicians up to the same standard of performance as the band member they
would be replacing. Booking though an agency would give them an even wider selection.
10. Can we play an iPod though your system between sets?
Many couples like to have a playlist of their favourite music on an iPod to play before,
between and after the bands sets. It is standard practice for a band to bring their own CDs
and/or iPods in place of this, but be sure to check that the band mention this service in their
contract or website. Most bands will bring the necessary gear and leads with them but it is
definitely better to be safe than sorry! Nowadays a lot of bands also offer a DJ option which
means the music doesn’t stop pumping after the band finish but you don’t have to spend a
lot of money on a separate DJ who would being doing the same job anyway.
