Traditional Ceremonies

The Eye Dotting Ceremony (Awakening the Lion). For weddings and grand openings, we recommend the traditional Eye Dotting Ceremony (Hoi Gong). This is a solemn and symbolic ritual where the VIP or guest of honour “awakens” the lion using a brush and red cinnabar paint.

• The Ritual: The guest dots the lion’s eyes (so it can see), nose (so it can smell), ears (so it can hear the drums), and mouth (so it can taste). Finally, a dot is placed on the forehead to give the lion life.
• The Meaning: This ceremony symbolises the spirit entering the lion, bringing life, energy, and protection to your event.

The Lettuce Eating Ceremony (Cai Qing). The highlight of many performances is the “Cai Qing” or “Plucking the Greens”.

The Blessing: After “eating” the greens, the lion dramatically spits the shredded leaves back out towards the business owner or audience. This is not messy—it is a shower of “wealth” and “good fortune” being spread to everyone present.

The Hunt: The lion approaches a green lettuce (often hung with a Red Envelope or Hong Bao containing payment for the troupe). The lettuce represents “Cai” (wealth/fortune).

The Southern Chinese Lion was hired to perform at the Lily Ball Event of Lily Foundation last March 11 at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, 18 Albert Embankment, London.
