Dear Titus,

I just want to thank you so much for sending the three marvellous musicians. I don’t know how guests found out that I had organised them, but I was given so many compliments from the assembled guests for finding them. The latter thought they were exceedingly accomplished and created perfect music for the occasion, mainly as it was held in a Raj tent with an Indian theme. Guests spilt out onto the lawn, and all could hear the music. It was a fantastic day with music and dancing from Indonesia and Spain & countries close to the heart of my late pal, Linda. My husband and I eventually left at 10.40 pm, and the party was still going strong! I managed to meet Udit and the others and hope they had a safe journey back to London.

Generally a Sitar player does not play on his own (solo) as the music would lack bass and rhythm which the tabla generally provides. The sitar on its own can sound quiet empty. The lowest you can hire the Sitar and Tabla Duo combination in London is approx £550.00 for a 1 hour booking, the standard 2 – 3 hour booking in London or within Greater London is £650.00 depending on the logistics of the venue. We have a combination of musicians of Indian origin and English origin who play Indian Music, however if you definitely need and Indian for aesthetic reason, we can provide this.

Can you tell me how much these are for a mid week date in July, for a supperclub/restaurant evening where i would require them for background music. I probably don’t have the money for 2 people, so can you send me some other ideas and examples of single players also. I don’t have a budget, the musician mus be indian.

The Indian subcontinent is what represents Indian classical music. It has two major traditional styles that make up the genre, the first tradition being the North Indian tradition of classical music known as the Hindustani and the South Indian expression known as Carnatic. However, they were not distinctive forms of musical traditions before the 15th century.

The Mughal Rule of the Indian subcontinent caused the respectful genres to separate and evolve into different forms of music. The Northern tradition honours improvisation and exploration of all aspects of a raga(a melodic improvisation/framework), whilst Southern traditions tend to be short composition-based. Despite these stark differences, there are still many ways in which these two systems have more similar and common features with each other.

The very roots of classical music from India are found in Vedic Sanskrit literature of Hindusim and the classic Sanskrit text on performing arts. The Hindustani music style is mainly found in North India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. But has also had Arab and Persian music influences, including the start of new ragas and the development of instruments such as the sitar and sarod. The instruments most used in the Northern style of classical Indian music also include the surbahar, esraj, violin, table, santoor, sarangi and more.

The Carnatic music style from Southern India comparatively is far more rhythmically structured and intensive than the North. Their elaborations are typically faster in tempo and a lot shorter than their equivalents in Hindustani music, and utilize the use of fixed compositions that are similar to that of Western Classical music. Whilst Carnatic compositions seem to have notated lyrical poems, primary themes that include worship, depictions of temples, philosophy and more, it is a common belief in South India that the music represents a more ancient approach to classical music. In contrast, Hindustani music has evolved by external influences.
